Located
in McMinnville, Oregon, Cascade Steel is a wholly-owned
subsidiary of
Schnitzer Steel Industries. The facility is
an 18 stand SIMAC mill with a 10 stand
POMINI rod block and a separate 17
stand Danielli bar mill. The SIMAC mill
comprises six stands of roughers, seven
stands of finishers and five intermediate
stands.
Cascade Steel produces about 700,000
tons of steel annually in the form of reinforcing
rebar, merchant bar, coiled rebar,
coiled wire rod and other products.
When it first started working with
SinterMet in 1993, Cascade Steel’s principal
objective was to improve the performance
of its mill operation. “I think they
wanted what all of our customers want,”
says Bill Posey, regional sales manager
for SinterMet. “They expected improved
performance, but also better quality production,
reduced downtime and an excellent
value.”
“We knew that SinterMet was a leader in
the composite roll market,” says Cascade
Steel’s Chuck Berrier, G.F. Rolling Mill —
Roll Designer. “We were confident they
could help reduce our headaches and
increase our running time.”
SinterMet achieved both objectives by
implementing a range of products over
the last eight years. SinterMet recently
replaced Cascade Steel’s traditional iron
rolls with Shur-Lock composite rolls and
implemented SinterMet’s SMETiC 2000
guide rolls to replace a competitors’
product. “We wanted SMETiC 2000
because it provides equal or better performance
with reliable deliveries,” says
Chuck.
Cascade Steel is also using SinterMet’s
grinding wheels and rod mill rolls, including
newer grades such as SM-80.
Additionally, SinterMet’s SVCR-9 has
provided Cascade Steel with a level of
improvement three to five times the life
of iron rolls. “Our carbide grades have
also improved performance,” adds Bill,
“typically by eight to ten times the life of
iron rolls.”
By forging a business relationship over
nearly a decade, Bill is confident that
Cascade Steel will continue to work closely
with SinterMet. “They know we’ll help
them grow their operation with top quality
products as they increase the number
of stands using our technology.”
Chuck adds, “SinterMet’s reputation for
outstanding performance, delivery and
quality precedes them, and that’s why we
turned to them for a long-term, multi-faceted
solution.”
